Birds of a feather flock together. ;) Especially birds that like to fly in massive cityscapes filled with twisted denizens and beasties. Still looking for a writer friend to chat/commiserate with?
Hello, Amanda! You guys still have room in your group? I'm all for finding writer friends to bounce ideas off too - and am getting overrun with plot bunnies. I'm deep in the throes of writing an erotica novel - and stuck, so I keep wandering off on tangents. I'm looking more for a group than a single cp, for someone who knows that I'm not looking to have punctuation and grammatical errors pointed out. For someone who is willing to just talk about the writing process sometimes, and not about where I think I'm going with this. And very secretly, for someone who understands that my characters sometimes (often) talk to me, and end up ignoring any plot I thought I might have been writing. And sneak into my dreams when I'm not looking.
I'm glad you liked my story, It's a little a like the novels I wrote. Fluffy, sweet, making the cool look not nearly as cool. Um so what's a HEA? Happy Ending Affair?
Fair warning - when it comes to these books, my warped sense of humor shows. The quicky high concept for each:
VWW - The Godfather meets Charmed
ZL - Night of the Living Dead meets Legally Blonde
ZW - Dawn of the Dead meets My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Don't you hate it when characters just won't leave your head? I'm beginning to think I'm secretly the love child of MaryJanice Davidson and Quentin Tarantino.
My e-mail is soharden@swbell.net if you have any other questions.
Interesting re: Heath Ledger's performance in TDK. I always considered Hannibal Lecter to be the ultimate villain. (That is, HL from The Silence of the Lambs.)
Which aspects of the fantasy/paranormal genres do you like the most?
The endless possibilities for what my protagonists can do...and must face. :) My h/H usually have some kind of super power, etc., I also have villains who are just as strong, if not stronger. But I don't care for purely evil villains. I want the villains to have logical (at least to them) desires and needs.
I read fairly widely, and here are some authors (and their books) that I like:
* J.R. Ward (Black Dagger Brotherhood Books 1, 3 -- possibly they're the best ones in the series
* Jacqueline Carey (I consider her debut trilogy to be her best work so far)
* Lynn Viehl (Twilight Fall)
* Linda Howard (anything she writes)
* Jim Butcher (The Dresden Files series)
* Naomi Novik (Temeraire series)
* C. S. Friedman (In Conquest Born)
* Elizabeth Vaughan (the Warlord trilogy)
* Neil Gaiman (Stardust)
* Shana Abe (The Smoke Thief)
I haven't read most of who you mentioned. I'll have to start looking them up! There seems to be a ton of urban fantasy out there, but I haven't been able to find the good ones.
The Host is good, for a sci fi contempary, along with Wen Spencer's Ukiah Oregon books.
I do read paranormal/urban fantasy. I read Jim Butcher, Kim Harrison (a few of her books) The Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris, aslo her Harper Connelly Mysteries that have a tiny bit of paranormal happening. Mercedes Lackey older novels A Diana Tregarde Investigation and Bedlam's Bard books.
I really need to find some good new urban fantasy! :) What do you like to read in the genre?
Hi Amanda,
I like your list of what you are looking for - it's pretty similar to mine. I'm a great fan of Sharon Shinn (fantasy and SF romance) and I'm more into character stories than hard fantasy or SF. My day job is writing too, and I'm definitely looking for someone with strong basics.
Well, first of all, I apologize if I sent this in the wrong forum. I was so excited at finding this site I didn't pay any attention to what forum I was posting in.
That being said, I haven't read that much YA, but I know it's a rapidly growing genre that I might be interested in branching out into later. I did start a YA novel some years ago but never finished it (like a lot of stuff I have)
My novel, Return of the Light, started out as a vampire romance 10 years ago. I did the research, character sketches, and wrote a synopsis and several chapters, then put it aside for several years, working on others things and mostly pursuing my artwork and getting my web design company going.
Now the novel has evolved into urban fantasy (I love it because 10 years ago, I had no idea the genre existed). It's based on the Sumerian descent myth of Inanna. My immortals, the 'Ru, are her soldiers on earth, sworn to protect mankind from the forces of the Underworld. They were created from the cursed blood of the Being of Light and therefore consumed the curse, which basically makes them vampires of a sort. In this book, Raphael, the main character of this book (others will step forward throughout the planned series), is in exile because he broke their Code, but the clan needs him to come home because something is killing their kind. As clues start to turn up, it's obvious the demons are making a move to take over.
Unlike most urban fantasy, it's written third person with three main characters, Raphael (the lover), Rudolf (the brooding warrior), and Elise (the snarky enforcer). My fave character has to be Elise, but I can't tell the story from just her point of view because the three are scattered around the world at the beginning of the novel and have to come together.
