Where did you hear about Crit Partner Match? (we want to say thank you to them!)

Looking for a crit partner with bite?

I've been in a couple of writers' groups and I really miss the support and inspiration that comes from talking about writing with like-minded people.

I've been writing professionally since university; research papers, manuals, technical writing, but I'm finding fiction to be very different, and quite a challenge.

I'm currently on my 5th novel attempt, and still learning. I think I'm over most of the newbie mistakes, and now I want to really tackle the big stuff; plot, characters, cohesiveness of the story. Oh, and actually finishing! I've made the commitment this year to write every day until I've completed my current WIP. I also have a number of completed shorts that need editing for submission.

What I can offer as a critique partner
I'm a tough critter. I am not afraid to point out holes in the plot, cardboard characters, unnecessary exposition or cliched descriptions. I offer honesty, but I'm not nasty. I can critique fantasy, speculative and SF, and I can ask tough questions about your science ;). I am happy to work on novels or short stories. I am open minded about most things.

What I'm looking for
I am looking for someone tough; someone who pulls no punches. I want to work, and work hard, to make my fiction the best it can be. I would like someone who is on the same track as me, or a bit more advanced, and definitely someone with solid basics in grammar and spelling, as I am very picky in that area.

What I would love
I would love to find a like-minded partner (or partners!) who, like me, is trying to live the writing life around family and work commitments, who just loves to write, but who is aiming for publication in the long run. Someone who likes to discuss plot and character, who enjoys the thrill of inventing and discovering.

You don't want me if:
You probably don't want me if you write erotica or horror. You definitely don't want me if you write literary. I can do detective, as I love to read mysteries, but I may not be your best bet as I don't write them! If you love purple prose, you'll loathe me. I am not the best fit for your christian fiction or your chick lit.

I have one amazing, perfect crit partner, but I'm looking for just one more. I want someone who likes to exchange work as they go, and likes to bounce ideas around when they're stuck. I need someone who can produce a chapter every 1-2 weeks, and someone who is committed to finishing.

The final requirement is that you need to like my work, and I need to like yours. If you're interested, let me know. We will swap first chapters and take it from there.

Hi, Merrilee,

I'm replying to the comment you left on my page. I would be interested in another crit partner (I have one at present).

You can contact me at jeannineberry at gmail.com to discuss it further if you like. BTW, if you are a keen proofreader you will notice that I spell my name wrong in the email address. This is because someone else had the nerve to claim my correctly spelled named first, LOL.

Hi Merrilee,

Looking at your profile, I feel like you'd be a great crit partner. I have not been a full-time writer until now (I am taking the next two years to do a master's degree in writing and to devote myself to writing), but I have a lot of experience with editing and analyzing literature. I am thorough in my critiques and good at spotting both the small details and problems with the big picture. I am sincere about wanting to be published, particularly with the novel whose second draft I have just finished, and I am willing to accept harsh criticism to make that happen.

I'm happy to answer any questions about myself or my writing that you might have.

Thanks for the comment! I've taken a stab at most genres but romance... always fun to try something differnet.

I definitely want to create a world that's my own and avoid cliche, so I think your advice is excellent. Thanks for leaving it.
