It's actually a blend of contemporary and historical. The main character finds herself drawn to an area of her parents yard. So she decides to work on the roses. In doing so, she digs up a wooden box with rotting leather straps around it. It contains four journals that lead her on a journey into a past that mirrors the present. That's when she comes to believe (with the help of a family tree) that's she's the person once thought to fight an evil and beat it before it destroys the past in an attempt to control the present. Kind of complicated but, from what I've read in newsletters lately, it's what teens are looking for. More complicated plots and tougher characters. Oh, there's also an element of finding her soul mate (in the 19th century instead of the 21st).
I do hope my late winter/early spring is very productive. I've already cleaned up most of the stuff I'm taking to Springmingle. Now I need to settle into getting back on my normal track.

Yes, I so agree about titles. A bad one can really ruin a book. For me, good titles set the tone and pace of the book. They also give me so many ideas I've left out of the planning.

I'm diving into conference prep. (I'm a planner on certain things, this being one of them.) Caitlyn Dlouhy says in her bio she's looking for interesting projects for the next year. So, I'm really concentrating on having four in top shape. After all, she needs choices. I'll listen to what she has to say and then present what I thinks best fits her needs. Then I have to dive into a contemporary/historical fiction series I've been researching for years. More than I like thinking about. But it's going to be good (imho). So cold gone and I'm back in the saddle. Like the Pony Express of old, I'm in full gear.

Thanks. The title eluded me forever. I couldn't think of anything that sounded right. Then this one hit. Now to get the story cooking. Still behind but catching up with each hour. This AM promises a blend of real life and my writing (the greatest escape of all!). But I shall prevail.

Have you given a thought to going to Springmingle? It's run by Southern Breeze, the GA, AL, MS branch of SCBWI. They also hold a fall conference in Birmingham. Look them up at http://www.southern-breeze.org/. This year's editors promise some great workshops. Caitlyn Dlouhy's on voice will help me a lot. I'm interested to find out of she's more into first person than third. There's also a marketing guru who will offer advice on how we should do that for ourselves. Here all along I thought I just had to write and sell the story (to either publisher or agent). Now I find out I have to do everything else. Phew! This is a very difficult business but I'm not quitting.

My current WIP still needs to start itself. A cold knocked the pins out from under me over the last week. I haven't done as much as I wanted to. In addition to that first draft, I'm also getting ready for Springmingle 09. It's the SCBWI Southern Breeze conference in Atlanta the last weekend of Feb. Caitlyn Dlouhy of Atheneum will be there. According to her bio, she's looking for new projects. So I'm pushing hard - as soon as I kick the cold out the door. But I hope to have a viable (but extremely rough) first draft by Tuesday of Adopt Me - Please.

Many thanks. I agonized over the makeup of the story for a long time. Now I'm trying to get a good start. Have looked for someone with similar interests for ages. Also have a fantasy novel in the works but it's still not coming together. When it does, it'll be more contemporary than medieval fantasy. Maybe that's why it's so hard.

Hello. I'm also writing a YA - fantasy adventure. I'm on the final edit\ polishing stage. I'm decent - I think - on the fight scenes. Most of mine are sword fights and magic fights.

If you'd like to see my crit stats, I've listed them on my page.

Jan,

Just read your profile and think we might have something in common. I am desperately seeking a CP. I'm in the final stages of editing my current WIP and while my local writing group is a nice distraction, they have no interest/knowledge in the paranormal/fantasy/horror type genres. I live in the southeast (Georgia) and have been writing forever. Have several trunk novels but I'm determined to get published this time.

Profile Information

What is your genre?
Mainly Fantasy, both YA and Adult, but also SF, mainstream, mild horror, occult, Christian Fantasy, Southern Regional, and a smattering of literary.
What do you write?
novels, short stories
Are you a pantser, a plotter, or a hybrid?
plotter
What is your current project?
YA Fantasy
What stage is your current project in?
I actually have three current projects. One is completed in an early draft form, and I am looking hard for a good beta for it. (Of course I would be willing to return the favor!) It is YA Fantasy and features both children and adults, so I definitely need a beta who enjoys reading about children.
The other two, a quirky YA fantasy and a straight ahead adult fantasy, both have great betas; I feel extremely blessed!
I'm looking for a CP who
wants to swap full drafts just for critique, is willing to swap chapters as we go
How long have you been writing?
As long as I can remember
Published or Aspiring?
published
What do you feel is your greatest strength as a writer?
Dialogue, characterization and strong plotting with unexpected twists.
What do you feel is your greatest weakness as a writer?
I don't enjoy writing description and I continue to work hard at writing really good, high-action fight scenes.
Do you have any specialized knowledge in some field?
I'm fairly knowledgeable about horses and dogs, and relatively informed about philosophy, theology and politics. I know a lot about tropical fish and martinis also.
Age
Old enough
Where are you from?
