What am I looking for and what I can help with...
(this form was borrowed from C.M. Clark's profile page because I thought it was fantastic)
What I read:
Lately (the past 2 years or so) I've read pretty strictly urban fantasy. Prior to that, I'd read general epic fantasy. I'm obsessive with the UF series I read (in a good way, of course). I've read some SF but the only series able to pull me in is Justina Robson's Keeping it Real, etc series. Several of the series I read border on paranormal romance, too. As long as it's plot-based then I'm good. Anything that's got humor gets boosted up a couple points, too in my opinion.
What I've done in writing:
I've started 4 novels (5 if I count the aforementioned Untitled 2 that needs to be fleshed out)... and I will be finishing one in the coming week as I finally have a place to end it. Following through and finishing books is something I'd like to work on.
How I crit:
I've beta-ed before, doing basic line editing and "bigger picture" edits. I will give an honest opinion. I like to go through and write in comments (hooray track changes from Word) as they occur to me when I'm reading... in my mind it serves as an audience gauge. I'm reading to crit, but I also like giving you my opinion as a reader (which it could be argued they're one and the same, but oh well). I can tell you what went through my mind when I read such and such line. However, if that doesn't float your boat and you want my overall opinion at the end of a chapter or book I can do that too. I'm pretty adaptable.
How I want to be critted:
I'm a stickler for spelling and grammar... if something has slipped by me, I'd love to know about it. Odds are, I'll catch it on re-edits, but it never hurts to let me know. Line edits are great, IMO. If some dialogue isn't working for you, I want to know where and why. If such and such seems out of character for someone, I'd love to have it pointed out. Basically, having another pair of analytical eyes would be indispensable to me. Also, if there's some grand thing in terms of plot, character/world building that doesn't make sense, I want to know. Whether it's a big problem or a little problem, I want someone's thoughts.
Turn around:
I'm a pharmacy student, so my studies keep me busy. However, I am extraordinarily trained in the art of procrastination. If I have the choice between studying for a pharmacotherapy exam and reading/editing New Shiny Book, I'm going to go with New Shiny Book. If I'm excited about your story, I can do 1-3 chapters/week depending on time commitments at school.
If you want crit on a finished novel all in one go? Depends on word count and all sorts of other variables... I'll take that as it comes. I'd be happy to send chapters as I get through them.
As far as returns? We'll just say that getting crit back spurs me to keep writing. The faster they come, the better. If it's taking a while longer than usual, I'd always appreciate a quick email here or there letting me know you're still aware of my baby. :)
Extra:
As I mentioned before, I'm a stickler for spelling mistakes. I once beta-ed something that had so many spelling errors that it was all I could do to correct ONLY that. Don't make me a spell check and I won't make you either.
If you have read and enjoy the following authors/series we would probably be a good match: Jim Butcher's Dresden series, Kim Harrison's Hollows series, Patricia Briggs Mercy Thompson and Alpha and Omega series, Vicki Petterrson's zodiac series, Jeaniene Frost's Kat and Bones series, Keri Arthur's Riley Jenson series, Richelle Mead's Georgina Kincaid series, Lisa Shearin, Carrie Caughn, Toni Andrews, Ilona Andrews, Jenna Black, MaryJanice Davidson's Queen Betsy series, Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse series (yeah, it's an extensive list)
Query letter and synopsis help would be beyond awesome.
To sum it up? I'm adaptable and can give you whatever detail of critique you're looking for. (ha, this is starting to sound like a personal ad)
Feel free to PM me if you think we might be a match.
As I'm horrible at synopsis writing, I won't even attempt to make a one-paragraph go at what Untitled 1 consists of.
Genre: Urban fantasy (ie: vampires, werewolves, and possibly more in later books)
Concerns: Cohesiveness, making sure each scene actually progresses the story, and size
Word count: approx 150K... Yeah... aiming to get it down to 115K or thereabouts
If you'd like my attempt at a synopsis, PM me and I'll give it my best shot.
