Amanda, you just made my day! I've been struggling with a bout of "I suck." I'm not getting any hits on my query for my 1st novel and I'm deep in the muckiness of the middle of this one. This WIP (still untitled) is chick lit.

Just stumbled onto this forum, so my comments are way after the fact, but I couldn't help replying. I'm not sure of the genre for this piece, but I was really intrigued by it. Numbers are fascinating to me, and the use of them here just sort of p...

Thanks! Unfortunately, this has been put on stand-still for the time being while working on revising 1st novel. Goal is to get back to this one in 2 weeks. *Fingers crossed*

hybrid
What is your current project?
I have two projects: YA contemporary fiction (FALLING TO NORMAL) and an untitled co-authored chick lit.
What stage is your current project in?
FALLING TO NORMAL is in the querying stage.

The untitled chick lit is about halfway done the first draft.
I'm looking for a CP who

What do you feel is your greatest strength as a writer?
My greatest strength as a writer is writing dialogue. I capture the realism without making it stilted. My other strength, though to a lesser degree, is pacing.
What do you feel is your greatest weakness as a writer?
My weaknesses as a writer are description, exposition, and unneeded repetition. I forget to add description and constantly get feedback of "I don't know who so-and-so looks like."

For exposition, I switch between not giving enough - especially internal - and reiterating.
Age
29ish

New Short Story - The Infestation

The infestation started a month prior. It began with one lurking in the dark. One quickly became two, and soon, there was a pack. It took a couple of days to notice what was happening. Television channels dropped off one by one starting with local access until C.N.N. was the last.

Dave had seen this before, of course. The flesh-eating vermin had been following him as long as he could recall. They were fearsome with their pallor, their stench, their shuffling gait. Their lack of coordination, th… Continue

Cutting is Beneficial

I finished my latest round of revisions for FALLING TO NORMAL just now.

One thing that strikes me as funny is that I did this while a family poker game is going on in the background. With my husband, father, aunt, and two uncles. One of the uncles is wearing a cheeseburger hat complete with wig. I don't know why, but he is. He and my father just went to the grocery store. My uncle is still wearing the hat. This is funny because my family unbeknownst to them have given me some of the best materi… Continue

Jumping the Shark

My friend Danielle and I were discussing this last night: can a novelist jump the shark? I think they can.

Take Anne Rice and the Vampire Chronicles, for example. I think she did this exact thing towards the end of the series two different ways. The first was by integrating the Mayfair witches with the vampires. The second was by giving Lestat a Christ complex.

What do you think? Can novelists pull a Fonzie? Who has?

One Down...

... More to go!

I sent out my first official query today to Serendipity Literary Agency. Go me!

It wasn't a standard query, as I met with the agent at Grub Street's Muse & The Marketplace writer's conference this past year. Grub Street does a manuscript portion for an extra fee, which I gladly paid. It was a good experience and stroked my ego a bit. So, I emailed her a quasi-query reminding her that she wanted to see my manuscript when I was done. Now, I wait.

I agree with Tom Petty. Wait… Continue

Cheyenne & Lucky's Grand Adventure

I previously stated how my cats are the best form of distraction ever. I still hold to that, but would like to add a disclaimer: DISTRACTIONS ARE BAD WHEN THEY HIT BEFORE DAYLIGHT.

First, see the cats here:

Hi Alicia. I read your profile and think we might be a fit. My email is jourdania@gmail.com if you're still looking for a CP.

Oh Query letters, I'm sort of good at them. I certain it was the quality of my query letter that got me call backs from agents, but it was the suckiness of my novel that got me the rejections.

I'm still in the early drafts of my novel, I'm at draft 3. I still have a bit of work still to do. But I'm always looking for feedback. I'd e-mail it to you, but I can't figure out how to e-mail the damn thing via this website.

I know what you mean, I hate summarizing the book, it sounds so weird and fake. I'm good at query letters, but when its a quick blurb I don't think I do it justice. How far are you in your novel?

Coolio! I'm working on (or at the moment I'm avoiding) the second novel in the series. I want to get the rough draft of the second novel finished before I focus on revising the first novel. Dear god how I hate revising. So much work for no pay off.

The first novel really focuses on high school and the relationships between five friends. My concern is that the characters don't seem realistic, interesting or even authentic. I could just be over thinking it.

So what is Trials and Tribulations about?

I think we write similar styles and we're in the same basic step in our writing. I just wanted to say hi!
